Spatial-temporal variations of surface water area during 1985–2023 in Mongolia based on Google Earth Engine
Abstract:Water is a fundamental resource for the development and production of human society. With the continuous development of remote sensing technology and cloud computing, the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform has become an important means for large-scale and long-term analysis and mapping of surface water bodies. This study utilized Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 8 OLI satellite data to analyze the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of surface water bodies in Mongolia from June to September between 1985 and 2023. The research findings indicate a declining trend in the area of surface water bodies in Mongolia from 1985 to 2023, with stable water bodies decreasing from 15,547.71 square kilometers to 14,452.13 square kilometers. This change primarily occurred in small lakes and rivers, while large water bodies remained relatively stable. The analytical results of this study provide an important foundation for a deeper understanding of the ecological environment changes in Mongolia. Furthermore, they offer guidance for accurately predicting future changes in water resources and the environment in Mongolia and for the effective management and protection of water resources.
